INSIDE GOVSATCOM

The awaited adoption of the €14.8 billion EU Space Programme 2021-2027 by the European Parliament brings new prospects for all users of space-related data and services and space sector stakeholders. The new Space Regulation is expected to strengthen the European space sector and enhance the security and autonomy of the EU. It will foster the provision of high quality, up-to-date and secure space-related data and services to public authorities, companies and citizens. It opens a new chapter for governmental satellite communications GOVSATCOM – a new Programme component. GOVSATCOM preparatory activities have gained new momentum. One of them is the ENTRUSTED project and its targeted consultations with GOVSATCOM users.

On 12 May 2021, the European GNSS Agency was officially transformed into the EU Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA), as the new Space Regulation has introduced a unified system of governance for the EU Space Programme. The EUSPA will be responsible for the security accreditation tasks for all EU actions in the space sector. The Agency will also play a pivotal role in the development of downstream applications and services based on all Programme components. Coordination of user-related aspects of GOVSATCOM is one of many tasks assigned to EUSPA. What is the new EUSPA’s mission?

BRINGING USER PERSPECTIVE TO EU GOVSATCOM

EU-wide consultations with prospective users of GOVSATCOM services have been launched by  Member States and EU agencies within the ENTRUSTED project. A dedicated survey study will assess the current and evolving needs of GOVSATCOM users, as well as their use of existing secure SatCom capabilities. Information obtained from respondents will be used for deriving a set of prioritised user requirements and identifying relevant use cases. User requirements will provide important insights for GOVSATCOM implementing acts.
